We much regret to record the destruction of the French

Lion Gambetta; which was torpedoed in the Adriatic by an Austrian submarine at 1 a.m. on Tuesday. The ship sank within some ten minutes, and the lose of life was very heavy, only one hundred and thirty-six men being saved out of a crew of over seven hundred. All the officers went down with the ship. The men who were saved were rescued by Italian destroyers, whole crews acted with the greatest humanity and devotion. The funeral of the victims was a very touching ceremony, and showed clearly the sympathy not only of the Italian civil population but of the Italian Navy. The coffins were smothered in flowers, Nothing could have exceeded the heroism with which the crew of the 'Lion Gambetta' met their fate. They proved worthy of the noble traditions of the French Navy.
