SIR,—I was surprised in reading your article on the above

subject in the Spectator of January 2nd to see " policemen " amongst the sundry recipients of the doles you there allude to. It would be interesting to know if your writer in his article was alluding to the Metropolitan Police (of whose regulations I know nothing), as I happen to know that in most county forces strict "general orders" forbid the receipt by police offiders of any such "tips" or other gratuities, and, what is not always the same thing, that these general orders are most strictly adhered to.—I am, Sir, &c., COUNTY CHIEF CONSTABLE.
