Another reflection which gives us pause is that in an

ultimate sense the late British Government under the direction of Mr. Lloyd George were largely responsible for the ruinous Greek policy in Asia Minor. But if this fact suggests that we ought not to take a final and inflexible line towards Greece, it also justifies the present British Government in having done their best to save the victims. Taking one fact with another, we regard Mr. Bonar Law's act as right and wholesome. But now that the protest has been made, we cannot think that it will be practical to let its effects continue indefinitely on the ground that some sort of reparation must be made. Our principle ought to be "We can't avoid doing business with you, but we shall not ask you to dinner."
