Lord Kitchener, who presided at the International Congress on Tropical

Agriculture at the Imperial Institute on Monday, gave an interesting account of the reclamation of waste salt, impregnated land at Biala, in the Nile Delta. As a result of scientific irrigation, cotton was now being grown on land which for ages had been regarded as useless. The value of the experiment was shown by the fact that there were one and a half million acres of such waste land in the Nile Delta await- ing development. Lord Kitchener also spoke of the great future in store for the Sudan as a cotton-growing area as soon as the irrigation works on the Blue Nile were completed.
