Nature Teaching: Based upon the General Principles of Agricul- ture

for the Use of Schools. By Francis Watts, B.Sc., F.I.C., F.C.S., and William G. Freeman, B.Sc., A.R.C.S., F.L.S. (John Murray. 38. 6d.)-It is difficult to criticise a school-book until it has been tested in the class-room, but this volume of elementary agri- cultural botany appears to be admirable in arrangement and expression. Of the two authors, the first is Government agri- cultural chemist in the Leeward Islands, the second superin- tendent of the Colonial collections at the Imperial Institute ; and the book was originally written for use in the schools of the West Indies, where it was found useful. This edition has been modified to snit British conditions. Proper stress is laid on the need for simple experiments which quicken the child's intelligence, and the illustrations are purposely restricted in order that the teacher may not shirk the trouble of showing the natural objects themselves.
