Naturally a work of fiction shows to some disadvantage side by side with a genuine record of actual experiences such as that noticed above. It has, however, the advantage of having its descriptions confirmed by a perfectly trustworthy witness. One thing, indeed, we would suggest. The tale begins with : "On an October evening in the year 1683 a small congregation of sorely persecuted French Protestants," &c. Now is the date correct ? In such matters it is necessary above all things to be exact. The Edict of Nantes was revoked on October 22nd, 1685. By this all the Reformed pastors were banished, having to leave the kingdom within fifteen days. That
