A SPECIAL. SANCTUARY.

I should like to see a -woodcock sanctuary. The bird is curiously particular about his resorts and can be easily attracted by supplying the right conditions. He is a born westerner ; and the west is very short of sanctuaries compared with the east. If it is true—and it seems to be true—that the species shows a greater tendency to nest in Britain, the happy change would certainly be stimulated by the provision of some bosky wood or other on the west coast. The bird has a special fondness for certain groves on the low black fenland of Lancashire ; and there are places where the fen approaches the sandy dunes that should be ideal.
