WHOSE PREP SCHOOLS?

Siu,—Mr. MeCrum claims that the preparatory schools flourish because they `provide an education for the nine-to-eleven age group incomparably superior to any provided by the State.' But is this really the point that occupies the minds of parents who support these schools? They know that the Preparatory schools begin the teaching of French at eight, of Latin at nine, so that when the boy takes his common entrance examination he is well-drilled in these heavily mark-scoring subjects. Not unnaturally, as a public school headmaster, Mr. McCrum regards such an education as 'incomparably superior.' The State primary and junior schools are living in another World . Until they begin to live in the same one the much closer relationship with the State schools' that Mr. McCrum says 'many public schools would welcome will remain a vague liberal notion.
