Sra,—In reference to the review of Lady Fanshawe's Memoirs in the Spectator of August 5th, I wish to say that I was asked by the publisher to contribute a brief intro- duction only to the reprint, and not to edit it. The first intimation that I was nominally the editor of the work, as well as the writer of the introduction, came to me when the book was announced for publication. I am not responsible, therefore, for the notes of the 1830 edition remaining in the new one in an out-of-date and unrevised condition.—I am,
