On Tuesday a Council of Ministers approved the new proposals

for further taxation and fiscal economies. The new direct taxation will be framed to raise 144,000,000. The field of the Income Tax is to he extended ; railway rates are to be raised. The- evasion of taxes and the export of capital are to be made more difficult. The recognition of the gravity of her position is growing throughout France, . and though M. Loucheur is bound to add to his present unpopularity, we believe that good sense will prevail over any ominous deMands for a strong Man who will save la patrie from the politicians. * * * *
