Causes of World Depression—(II) Human or Natural Factors
Iasi. week I dealt with the views of those who assert that the .prime cause of world depression is to be found in monetary policy. I will now simply recapitUlate some of the main developments of the War and post-War period, and I wish to do so with as little comment as possible, leaving it to the reader to say whether in these events there are or are not to be found sufficient causes to make it unnecessary to search for the more elaborate explana- tions offered by some of the economists. As I said last week, decision on this matter is of some importance, because if it is considered that the main causes are monetary, then the solution has to be found and the reme- dies have to be applied by bankers and monetary scientists rather than by the general public.
