The nomination for Clare County took place on Saturday ; the polling on Tuesday and Wednesday. There were two candidates, Mr. Francis Calcutt and Captain Luke White. As the latter lost the show of hands, his friends demanded a poll. Mr. Calcutt defeated his opponent, obtain- ing the large majority of 1849 votes.

A strong body of the clergy of the diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross have expressed their concurrence with the views of the Primate on the art4tioss:017 education. They declare their belief "that the principles of the nitiOnal system of education in Ireland are the best under the cir- ennrstluseee," and they "earnestly hope that the late declaration of the intentions of her Majesty's Government to uphold the system may lead the clergy generally to secure for their schools the advantages which it affords."
