Mr. J. Morley and Mr. Raikes having spoken against the

amendment, and Mr. Storey in its favour, the House divided, and rejected Mr. Woodall's amendment by two to one,—by 271 votes against 135 ; majority, 136. Only thirty-one Liberals voted for the amendment, but eight Home-rulers and ninety-eight Con- servatives voted with them,—in all 137, two of them being the two tellers. The majority, which, including tellers, numbered 273, was made up of 234 Liberals, thirteen Home-rulers, and twenty-six Conservatives; so that the Conservatives for the most part stayed away.
