Sir: Surely Mr John Rowan Wilson is as guilty as
those he condemns in your 2 August issue when he accuses Turkey of being more Greek than the Greeks?
The army in Turkey did stage a coup, but in 1960. By 1962, the date he quotes, a new -I constitution had been written, a new electoral law drafted and a general election held. That cannot be 'all Greek' to him. The election, held in 1961, was declared by all observers as being very free, in fact more so than pre- vious ones in that country.
I should add that Adnan Menderes was tried (with others) by an official court and given a good hearing. His crimes included violation of the constitution, dictatorial tendencies and delaying tactics. Turkey's mistake, perhaps, was NI in carrying out the death penalty, something now many regret. But that cannot be described as 'celebrated their victory by hanging the Prime Minister.'
It seems to me Mr Wilson casts his net a bit too wide and loses his catch, which is a pity, as he lets some big fish escape. E. A. Howe
