In the latter part of his speech Mr. Asquith dealt

with Ireland, and adjured the nation not to add another to the tragic series of missed or misused opportunities in the history of our relations with her. What was dosirea now was a provisional settlement :— " When the war comes to an end we shall hate to take stock, as an Empire, of our internal relations. With such an Imperial record of the war, it will never be possible to revert to our old methods of counsel and government. The fabric of the Empire will have to be refashioned, and the relations, not only between Great Britain and Ireland, but between the United Kingdom and our Dominions, will of necessity be brought, and brought promptly, under close and connected review."
