NEWS OF THE WEEK.
THE Conferences in London over the Irish Constitution have continued during the week, and when we go to press on Thursday there is a general though vague report, evidently sanctioned by the Government, that they have ended more satisfactorily than seemed to be at all possible ten days ago. We have not more than these reports to go upon as Mr. Churchill's statement in the House has not yet reached us. Of course, if the Irish Free State representatives are, as the Government suggest, really inspired by good faith and intend to govern firmly and conscientiously in Ireland and without dictation from the irreconcilables, there is just a ray of hope. It would be one of the greatest causes for satisfaction that this generation has experienced, indeed an unparalleled political relief, if after all order should shape itself out of the present chaos in Ireland. Every sane person desires such a conclusion so earnestly that he would be false to himself if he did not clutch at every passing possibility that may be turned to good account.
