Cause for concern

Sir: As a doctor (and a psychiatrist) I ap- plaud your new-found sympathy with the

anti-vivisectionists (Notebook, 4 December) and share your concern about the unhinged behaviour of some of their adherents. There is no doubt that much hideous suffering is inflicted on animals in the name of medical science and that something effective needs to be done about it. A course of action more practical (and more humane) than sending letter bombs to politicians is to support the admirable work of FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments) which is doing much to promote methods of medical research which do not involve torturing live animals (e.g. the use of cell cultures in tests of drug toxicity, etc). Those wishing to know more should write to FRAME, 5b The Poultry, Bank Place, Nottingham NG1 2JR.
