4444,44144444-44-4444 Books of the year
We asked some of our contributors to name some of the books which they most enjoyed in 1982.
J. Enoch Powell R. A. Butler's The Art of Memory (Hodder & Stoughton) because it refreshed my own memory of the political and personal arts of a great public servant. Michael Collie's George Borrow Eccentric (CUP) because I rejoice that a boyhood favourite and in- spirer is coming back into recognition and popularity. We shall know more about him than his contemporaries did. The Gospel according to St Matthew (in Greek) (United Bible Societies) because, however deep I dig, I find new caverns of mystery and marvel opening beneath.
