A well-documented book which reveals to what a terrible degree Giss- ing's character ruled his destiny — as miserable as Sir Laurens's was exhilarating. A great scholar and dedicated novelist he yet persisted in marrying below his station, not loading himself with chains believing them to be garlands, but knowing that they were chains. The Love Letters Of William and Mary Wordsworth Edited by Beth Darlington (Chatto & Windus), In 1977 a stamp dealer in Carlisle sold to Sotheby's a package of papers for £5. They included an exchange of 31 letters between William and Mary Wordsworth while married. They are just as ardent as the letters between William and Dorothy. This is a very important addi- tion to our conception of Wordsworth.
