To Follow David About now, I suppose, the traditional letters
of resignation from the United States• Ambassa- dors start winging their way to Washington. In due course the new President appoints his new choices. It will be sad if we lose David Bruce. Indeed, I doubt if any two men have ever served their countries better than the two Davids: David Bruce in London and David Ormsby-Gore, now Lord Harlech, in Washington.
But if we do lose David Bruce (and if the hot tip for his successor comes up) I think London will like George McGhee, now US Ambassador in Bonn, very much.
He is a Texan, which pulls for him, and he did a great deal in President Johnson's 1960 cam- paign, which pulls even harder. He conies to diplomacy via the law and oil. Perhaps that explains why he manages to appear smooth and tough, confident and diffident all at the same time. He knows us well, especially from his time at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. I only hope the favourite wins. After all, the last one I tipped in Quoodle did.
