Mr. Ellis, an Australian, tells the story of an overland
journey by car from London to Delhi in an attempt to reach Australia with a maximum of 800 miles of sea travel. He says that the monsoon rains made it impossible for him to proceed beyond Delhi. This puzzles us, because although during this season the roads may be breached in places, there is usually some means of getting through, given the patience and determination which the author displayed at earlier stages in his journey. The book is too long and contains too many of the author's small misadventures and difficulties, yet much of it is well written and entertaining. (Express to Hindustan, The Bodley Head, 12s. 6d.)
