WESTERN HISTORY FOR EASTERN BOYS AND GIRLS. [To THE EDITOR
OP THE " SPECTATOR."' SIR, —A work which sets forth the vital periods of European history in a manner suitable for children in Syria is Cesare Balbo's Summary of the History of Holy. It is free from the bias given by recent controversies, sound upon all questions of human progress, art, and literature, and though compendious gives a clear, easy account of people and events. In instances where his information is anti- quated it is not hard for a teacher to bring it up to date, nor to amplify it where his treatment is felt to be too brief. Italy is an ideal centre for the study of old times, and for modern times it is not amiss to concentrate upon the map of one country. The Italian edition published by Felix le Monnier at Florence after the author's death would do for pupils who can read that language. Has it been translated ? May I suggest it for Canon Waddy's consideration ?--I am, Sir, &c.,
W. H. Walser.
