Durham and Nicaea
Sir: May one of A. N. Wilson's fellow passengers be allowed to disassociate him- self from the extraordinarily offensive arti- cle ('Cruising with the Bishop') you pub- lished under his name in your issue of 30 August?
One would have thought that ordinary good manners, if not Christian charity, would have dissuaded A. N. Wilson from abusing the hospitality afforded by a Swan Hellenic cruise to pen a scurrilous attack on one of his fellow passengers.
I certainly did not hear the Bishop of Durham attribute The Hunting of the Snark to Edward Lear, not did I hear him say that it was his favourite poem, but perhaps A. N. Wilson may have been dreaming, as he certainly must have been to have stated that the Church of Santa Sophia was the site of the first Council of Nicaea,; our distinguished guest lecturer, Professor Tomlinson, stated specifically that it was not the site of the Council, which almost certainly took place in Con- stantine's Palace, the remains of which have not yet been discovered.
