the following incident sufficiently relevant to the present controversy to be worthy of publication. About twenty years ago I attended a service at a Roman Catholic church in Bayswater. The day was the anniversary of the school connected with the church, and the special preacher was Cardinal Manning. In the course of his sermon the Cardinal made, with considerable emphasis, the following statement, which I took down at the time :—" As an honest man, I cannot say that a school in which the Bible is read, prayers are said, and Christian hymns are sung is not a Christian school. It is Christian, but it is not Catholic."—I
