The Literary Gazette of this day reports that Captain William
Allen had sailed from Ascension for the Niger before any orders from home could arrive to stop the expedition. " The accounts from the settle- ment were of a nature to require very prompt measures to rescue the colonists from the pressure of the surrounding population and their faithless barbarian chiefs ; and Captain Allen lost no time in proceeding to their aid. He proposes to ascend the river, we believe, with the Wilberforce and Soudan, no farther than their location, and to bring them off from their perilous position."
