SIR,— Mr. Redfern says that 'Coventry could not be provided
with an old cathedral.' This is not so. With- out voicing an opinion of the desirability of the suggestion, about which I am not in a position to judge, I well remember that at the time when the new cathedral was under consideration the Vicar of Holy Trinity suggested that that church should be taken as the cathedral church of the diocese. Holy Trinity is an old church—dedication date 1298----in a central and prominent position (at the top of the hill, not on the slope as the old cathedral, or at the bottom in a hollow, as is the new). It is quite large and dignified enough for an unimportant modern diocese. But, as Gillie Potter said at the time, 'there was no showman- ship in that.'
