RAILWAY SERVICE.

[To THE EDITOR OF THE " SPECTATOR."] SIR,—You wrote in the Spectator of March 8th : " One day of rest in seven, which we enjoy." Some of us do, some of us do not. J happen to be the vicar of a parish where the very great majority of the inhabitants are railway servants. It is a fact that hardly any of these railway servants enjoy one day of rest in seven, and that very many do not even enjoy one day of rest in fourteen. One Sunday out of three is the portion of, I believe, the majority, but certainly of a very large fraction of my parishioners. I do not like " grand- motherly" legislation; but here both private welfare and public service are concerned, and I am thankful that the Government was defeated on the question of an inquiry into the hours of work demanded from railway servants.—I am,
