All those who wish to know everything that can be known as to the details of the artist's life and works will have recourse to this volume. When it comes to the critical part and the theories enunciated, many people will find themselves in total disagreement with the arthor. For instance, in his review of Venetian art he makes out that the Venetian painters cared only for sentiment and gorgeous colour, and contributed nothing to the study of Nature.
