THE GOLD STANDARD

[To the Editor of the. SPECTATOR.] SIR,—The main thesis of your article under the above heading in the Spectator of. January 10th, that our return to -the Gold Standard will raise the value of gold and so increase the burden of the American debt, is true enough ; but is that a valid reason for the adoption of some other currency policy ? if, as I have always understood, the gold debts due to us from the rest of the world exceed in amount our indebtedness to America, I would submit the American interests and our own are identical.—I am, Sir, &c., WILLIAM BRUNYATE.
