Red Heels. By Margery Lawrence. (Hutchinson. 7's. 6d. net.)—Miss Margery

Lawrence contrives to give a certain freshness to the well-worn subject of the acquisitive courtesan who has nothing but her looks to recommend her. It is ingenious to bring home the charms of such a lady through the cold medium of print, and this the author certainly contrives to do. The theatrical scenes are cleverly described, and the section of the book in which Celimene, the dancer, is transported on a long unofficial honeymoon to the wilds of Brittany is extremely entertaining. Her gradual disillusionment as to the simple life is well done, but it must be confessed that after this the rest of the story drags.
