POINT FROM LETTER MAY MARRIAGES.
The two oldest and best known English couplets run thus
" If ye marry in Lent You will live to repent "
and
" If ye marry in May You will rue the day."
Lent, however, as a close season for marriage, certainly, I regret to note appears to be on the decline. Not so however with the prejudice against May as a marital month. Few people, however, are aware that the superstition about May marriages is of ancient origin. Ovid, in his Fasti, liber V, wrote thus of these marriages :
" Menke malas Maio nubere vulgus ait."
