Women priests
Sir: Edward Norman answered 'The priestess question' (November 18) very interestingly — and to my mind, with good effect. In the Catholic Church, I do not think that the Pope is wrong to continue excluding women from the priesthood. It is not impossible that it would be women themselves, in general, who would object markedly to women priests. Women are not unworthy of the priesthood — they are unsuitable to it. But they already contribute a ' priesthood' of their own to the Church which, by and large, is superlative and indispensable: a service could receive no better praise. Also, the Church must heed its own scriptural canon. Already there is too much departing from it in certain sector; through a Judas-like 'modernism' which would betray the whole effective being of the Church for a few paltry pieces of admiration from ' progressive' lunacy. But the Church is founded on a rock, not on a sentimentalist jelly, although there are are many leftish jelly-babies who fancy themselves as Peter.
