HOMECROFTING IN INDIA [To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.) SIR,--11
send you a copy of a letter from Rabindranath Tagore in which he advocates Homecrofting„ using the very term the Spectator is using. There is no doubt that Homecrofting is the greatest hope. An appeal is to be made, supported by Dr.
Tagore and front-rank men, for a good colony in am, Sir, &c., J. W. PETAVEL. Baghbazar, Calcutta, January 13th, 1928.
Dr. Tagore's letter is as follows :— " DEAR CAPTAIN PETAVEL,—I welcome the appeal you propose to make on behalf of the educated youth of our country who need employment and who arewilling to invest a small capital. There is no doubt that your scheme, if helped by a sufficient number of supporters among the wealthy, will lead to far-reaching, beneficial results. Its chief value lies in the new path of co-operative service which you open out for the boys, orphan or otherwise, who will be sent to join your Homecrofting colonies. I do hope and trust that you may gain a sufficient number of friends and sympathizers who will enable your work to fructify.—Yours sincerely, RABINCRANATE TAGOEE."
