The singular rumours about the White Pasha who has been
seen on the White Nile are revived in a telegram of the 24th inst. from Cairo, announcing that natives who have arrived at Wady Ralf& confirm the stories of the white Christian who has reached the Bahr-el-Gazul province. He las a large force, he is marching northwards, and he is driving all before him, to the terror of the Khalif Abdullah, who has sent three thousand men against him down the Nile without result. The persistence of this story is very curious, as is also the fact that the large force is always black and naked. Is it not just possible that Stanley has won some .division of the great Niam-Niam tribe, is slowly forcing his -way up the Nile, and deliberately abstains from sending in- formation to the Congo until he has achieved some great and previously designed result ? There could be no object in inventing the story, or in attributing to the Khalifa alarm at a movement in the extreme South.
