During the night of November 23rd-24th six German destroyers tried
to approach the north.end of the Downs and were seen by a patrol vessel. The enemy fired about twelve rounds and steamed off home to report that they had shelled the open town of Ramsgate. More shame still to them if they had done it ! One shell hit a drifter and damaged her upper works. As inevitable as the character of the German announcements of this little affair was the manner in which some of our ginger newspapers, who turn everything into hot stuff for the Government, pounced upon the raid as a proof of incompetence in high quarters.
