4 6 PROFESSORS " Sin,—Janus would have us limit the honorific

title of Professor to such as hold one of the higher teaching posts in a recognised university, and there is much to be said for such a restriction. But there is at least one historic exception to such a rule. When Sit Thos. Gresham founded the college in the City of London which bears his name—having in mind, no doubt, its ultimate evolution into a third English university—he stykd the seven teachers for' whose stipends he made provision "Professors," and so they have been entitled ever since. The City Treasurer, who nowadays issues the cheques on behalf of the Court of Governors of the College, always addresses them to "Professor " So-and-So. 'And, I may add, I find myself so styled by the authorities of my own (ancient) university !

I enclose my card, but with your permission prefer to sign myself " A GRESHAM PROFESSOR."
