The Mind of the Artist : Thoughts and Savings of
Painters and Sculptors on their Art. Collected and Arranged by Mrs. Laurence Binyon. (Chatto and Windus. 3s. 6d. net.)—The work of Defection has been admirably done, and the result is an anthology of quite remarkable interest. Here are no vague speculations by people who preach what they do not practise, but the wisdom of men who have done the things they talk about. The extent of the ground covered by the selections is as wide almost as art itself, and ranges from Cennin' i to Hokasai. Of course there are gaps which cannot be filled. What would we not give for half-a-page of Phidias's views on the combination of sculpture and archi- tecture, or the theories of colour-decoration of the artist who made the mosaics in that mysterious chapel in St. Praxed's Church. This book should be in the hands of every art student, for it will naturally carry conviction to him more than the writings of critics.
