The Sculptures of Chartres Cathedral. By Margaret and Ernest Marriage.

(Cambridge University Press. 12s. net.)—The authors have given their text both in English and French, and have pro- vided a very large number of photographs of the carvings of the

Cathedral. Indeed, they claim that though other works have more minute descriptions in their text, the sculpture itself has never before been so fully illustrated. The photographs were taken by the authors at different times, and, considering the very great difficulties of such work, are excellent. The interest of the Chartres statues is to be found in their spirited character. They may not have the grace and completeness of some of the work to be found at Rheims or Amiens, bat their energy and directness are wonderfully impressive.
