Chetham Hospital and Library. By Albert Nicholson. (Sherratt and Hughes.
2s. 6d. net.)-Mr. Nicholson gives a sketch of history from the Roman occupation downwards, adding the names of local celebrities as we pass from one epoch to another. He comes to the strictly appropriate part of his subject when he reaches Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653). This worthy loft more than £10,000 for a school and library. The latter seems to have prospered more from benefactions than the former, for the number of boys on the foundation has had to be reduced; the library, on the other hand, now numbers more than fifty-six thousand volumes. Not a few works of historical and antiquarian interest have been published by the Society which bears the name. We are glad to express our appreciation of this work of piety.
