Alderman Cobden of Manchester. By Sir E. W. Watkin, Bart.

(Ward, Lock, and Co.)—This is a volume mainly devoted to setting forth the services performed by Mr. Cobden in his civic capacity. A chapter, for instance, is given to his relations with the Corpora- tion of Manchester, and another to his work in the foundation of the Manchester Athonnum. Of course there are notices from time to time of his political action, and, indeed, the connection between the two parts of his life is very close. The book is illus- trated by some interesting portraits and other photographs. Any complete life of the great Reformer must take this volume into account.
