In a recent interview Sir John French spoke of a

"pro- tracted war," and a correspondent of the Times asked him for an interpretation of the phrase. The interpretation is as follows : "The protraction of the war depends entirely upon the supply of men and munitions. Should these be unsatis- factory, the war will be accordingly prolonged. I dwelt emphatically on the need for munitions in the interview to which you refer."
