The eviction of thousands of Highlanders for sheep, 'the four-footed

clansmen,' was a major Victorian scandal. A Pistol in Greenyards, by Mollie Hunter (Evans, 16s.), is angry rather than glum, a tale of greed and monstrous officialdom never quite balanced by the Resistance. It in- cludes massacre, death by snow and fire; escape and chase. That happy endings seldom occur is no longer censorable news. but makes such novels more convincing. This particular one will add a sardonic and touching angle to the fable of the Good Old Times.
