The result of the Walthamstow by-election, upon which we comment
elsewhere, was announced on Wednesday. Sir John Simon received 16,673 votes, which gave him a majority of 2,766 over Mr. Johnson, who received 13,907. Although the total poll was nearly 3,000 lower than at the General Election, Sir John Simon has increased his majority by 571. Between 1886 and 1906 Walthanistow had always returned Unionists by very large majorities, except at the by-election in 1897, when a Liberal won by 279 votes. Since 1906 the Liberal majority has never fallen below 2,000.
