ECONOMY IN THE CIVIL SERVICE

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—With the cry of economy in the air, I am inclined to wonder why the Government do not have recourse to the simple expedient of abrogating for a few years the rule requir- ing Civil servants to retire at 65. I have no figures relating to superannuation at my elbow, but the substitution of 68 or 70 for the present limit would have an immediate effect, and the results be cumulative in proportion to the period for which it was maintained.—I am, Sir, &c.,
