BAXTER'S HYMN: A CORRECTION.
r To THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."] Sin,—Your correspondent, "4 High Churchman," in the Spectator of September 29th, reverses the meaning of the verse he misquotes. The " day " Baxter wrote of begins, not ends, with death :— " If life be long, I will be glad That I may long obey.
If short, —yet why ghquld I be sad To soar to endless day !"
Your correspondent gives the last two lines :-- "If short, no labourer is sad
To end the toilsome day."
