AN unpleasant feature among Industrial shares during the week has been the fresh weakness of Royal Mail Steam Packet Ordinary Stock, the quotation on Tuesday last being only £2 for £100 of stock. It has, of course, been recognized for some time past that all the indications suggested that Royal Mail Ordinary stockholders had little to hope for so far as the immediate future was concerned. But the special weakness of the last few days has been connected with the sensational suggestion of stockholders in the Company having some kind of unlimited liability as a result of their holding. Two totally different opinions have been given by leading Counsel. The latest statement by the Voting Trustees of the Royal Mail Company was to the effect that Counsel consulted had expressed the opinion that no such liability was to be feared. On Thursday of next week a meeting has been called of the First and Second Debenture holders of the Royal Mail Com- pany and of the Preference shareholders of the White. Star Line, when it may be hoped that a more comprehensive statement with regard to the general situation will be placed before them than has up to the present been made.
