...and Bacon
Sir: I am very sorry that Christopher Sykes should have followed Dr Rowse in descending to personal abuse in an attempt to discredit Baconians. It is 99 per cent certain that Mr Sykes has not studied the authorship problem either. and even if he has, he has not visited us to acquaint himself with the results of recent research. As, for example. The 67th Inquisition, a book of which he is doubtless totally unaware,
Nevertheless I am still prepared tO ask Mr Sykes to join us in this very important literary study. All must acknowledge that old ideas are breaking up, and fresh discoveries are being made in new fields of knowledge — even Einstein's Theory of Relativity i5 being looked at anew. Readers of The Spectator may think that their intelligence is being insulted when theY are asked to accept old hat dogma withosit any reasons being vouchsafed. As to Mr Sykes's " unwelcome acclaim," I can only say that to the best of my knowledge no Member of the Society has been responsible for this.
