The King's Birthday Honours, announced on Tuesday in bewildering volume,
were thistly awarded for war service. The names of Sir Douglas Haig and Sir David Beatty rightly stood at the head of .the list. The Field-Marshal and the Admiral to whom the emmtry owes so much for their long and brilliant services had fully earned the Order of Merit which they received. That Order, we are glad to think, is severely restricted, in number, and has become the most honourable distinction to which a British citizen can aspire.
