Golden bore

Sir: While I would endorse Bill Grundy's plea (23 May) for more news and fewer stunts in the popular press, I would like this to be at the expense of—e.g.—the intermin- able pages of repetitive 'sports' chatter. rather than of a few endearingly dotty stunts like the transatlantic race. Person- ally I find chimpanzees presenting bouquets at the Post Office Tower infinitely more engaging and newsworthy than the ever- lasting goals kicked by Bournemouth Tues- day, or runs scored by some to me unknown hero at Lord's—especially as what is called sport seems in these days to require so many wrecked trains, injured spectators. stormed grandstands and overworked policemen. How about just listing, for the addicts. the goals, wins, losses etc., neatly and com- pactly, like Premium Bonds, and devoting the saved space to news?
