SIR,—The range of enjoyment of a reader who finds Piers
Plowman boring, and Troilus and Criseyde a 'footling rigmarole,', must be unhappily limited. Mr. Amis's article on 'Anglo-Saxon Platitudes' suggests two quotations:
'1. 'Missing so much and so much.'
2. 'Can we do nothing for the man in the cart?' 'Nothing but sympathise.'
